The Charm of Terroir: Characteristics of the Volcanic Wines of Vulture and Vesuvius

Tasting the volcanic wines of Vulture and Vesuvius allows you to understand how the nature of the soil can profoundly influence the character of a grape variety. These territories, though geographically distant, share a common geological matrix that gives the wines their unmistakable characteristics.

Vulture Wines: Power and Minerality

Mount Vulture, an ancient extinct volcano, gives its wines an austere structure and exceptional longevity. The dark soil, rich in tuff and potassium minerals, translates into:

• Deep, almost ferrous mineral notes.

• Dense, velvety tannins that soften with age.

• Complex aromatic profile, characterized by dark fruits, spices, and a distinctive licorice note.

Vesuvius Wines: Freshness and Marine Savoriness

Moving toward the Campania coast, Vesuvius offers a unique winemaking landscape, where the vines are rooted in ash and lapilli. Here, the influence of the sea merges with the power of the active volcano, creating wines that stand out for:

• Distinct savoriness, which lends an energetic and refreshing drinkability.

• Sulfurous and smoky notes, typical of young volcanic soils.

• Elegant aromas, reminiscent of yellow flowers and broom in the whites, while the reds express crisp red fruits and balsamic notes.

Participating in this evening means exploring the resilience of grape varieties that grow on challenging soils, yet are capable of producing wines of extreme elegance and personality, perfect for enhancing the robust and authentic recipes of the Vesuvian and Lucanian traditions.
